World Cup

Yup, the World Cup fever has definitely struck me as well. Before the WC started, I expected England to put up a strong challenge, playing well and maybe even winning it. As stunned by the scoreline as anyone else, England beat Paraguay by a mere 1 goal. The fact that it might have been an own goal made it worse.

During the EPL season that just ended, it was pleasing to see the young midfielders playing the top of their game. People like Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard played very well at their clubs, scoring quite a lot of goals as well. At the back, with John Terry in the heart of the England defence, together with Ashley Cole who still seemed sharp enough after a long layout due to injury, a great goalkeeper like Paul Robinson, it didn't seem a serious problem for England to keep goals out.

The only serious setback is the well-known metetarsal(duno how to spell) injury that struck Owen in January and Rooney in April. Little did I expect Sven to put faith in a horrible striker like PETER CROUCH. Besides being tall, I can't see any use in him in the England squad. Yes, he's played fine in Liverpool, showing great awareness, passing good balls to midfielders running in, but that is club level football. Hattrick against Jamaica... So what? They didn't qualify for the WC!

Now Sven has made CROUCH the chief striker. This resulted in England playing a one-dimensional football - the highball. Instead of playing fast-paced attacking football, theoretically on the ground most of the time, they lob the ball most of the time into the 6yard box to who else? CROUCH. It dulls the game very much. Now we see England struggle to score goals. Well done Sven.

After the first round of matches completed, personally I'd like to see the likes of Argentina, Ivory Coast, Czech Republic, Italy, Australia and Sweden progressing far into the WC. Let's see lorz, lol.
