moral vs logic
There, the hot topic for our platoon for this wk. The debaters for this round are Kok Boon, Yuan Sheng, Cheng Hon and me. Our discussion actually began about what else but Christianity again. Here are some 'facts' that are stated in the Bible...God is all-knowing(what I understand from this is he literally knows EVERYTHING), God has laid a path for everyone, those who do not believe in God will go to hell(what i understand from this is, non-Christians all go to hell), Jesus is coming back again really soon.
Well, I just want to make this clear that I'm a Buddhist so I'm not really sure about the teachings of the Bible larz. What I hear from my Christian friend is that God knows all the choices we will make since God is all-knowing. This brings about my curiosity, if God already laid our path and he knows the choices that we'll make, then why do people say we make our own decisions? For e.g, God has already laid my path, knows that I'll be a Buddhist, meaning he knew all along that I'll go to hell, then why create me?
From there, we go on to talk about during a wartime in our country and our wife is pregnant, will we let the child be born or abort it if possible? Most of us will think in the moral sense, that the child deserves a chance to live and we shudn't take it's life without giving it the chance to try to survive the war and live on. But not Kok Boon. His pt of view is not wrong either, just that he thinks of it in a very very logically way. He will abort the child if possible, not giving it a chance to try to survive the war. His reasons? No matter how successful the child may grow up to be, maybe do great things which will help mankind etc etc, it's life is worthless before the child is born. He would not take the chance (i.e, the chances of the child surviving the war) and kill the child before it is born. He would rather not let the child suffer during the wartime even if he'll survive it. Well, most of us find it quite cruel of course, taking a life away without giving it the chance of fighting for it's survival. This is a question of moral vs logic lorz. The interesting thing about this is that when you think morally, you might not make the right decision as compared to a logical decision. For e.g, if you need to kill a person in order to be successful, logically you'll do that and you'll be successful. But morally? You will not kill the person and you won't be successful lorz.
From the suggestion that our lives are worthless, Kok Boon tells us something sort of like a fact of life. Why did our mums give birth to us? Of course, one main reason is cos of her love for our dad larz. The other very practical reason? So that we can take care of her when she's old lorz. Hmm, what about her love for us most of us would ask? How can she love you if you're not even born yet? *sucker punch*
